Last week I had to pick up Pampers Baby Dry disposables in his size, as they were all out of the Swaddlers in his size at like 5 different stores! They’re supposed to be very similar diapers etc, and that could not be further from the truth. He didn’t develop a rash, but I found that they fit him poorly, his skin was always red and irritated. They absorbed well, but the absorbtion gel crystals would start to disperse out into the diaper. That freaked me out as those crystals are what causes TSS. So I made the decision to get my butt down to the store this week and figure out a solution. So Tuesday afternoon I zipped out to The Extraordinary Baby Shoppe to do some cloth diaper shopping. I picked up some simple Chinese prefolds(PFs_ and some Snappis as we already have several Bummi Whisper wraps to use as covers courtesy of Marc’s mum. They have a fantastic diaper loan program too, so I got my name put in the list. They essentially have 1 of everything they offer in the store for you to try out and see which diaper system works best for you. In the near future we will be expanding our diapers to some fitteds and AIOs (All in Ones)
I spent all night Tuesday running the PFs through four hot water washes and drying them so that the natural fiber oils broke down and would be absorbent. Yesterday morning was his first time in them. Took a few tries to get the Snappi to work right on him and not be too tight (baby comfort learning curve here!), but I got him in and he was good to go. It didn’t take long for Lucien to make a mess of himself. With CDs the baby knows he’s staying wet as there is no moisture lockaway barrierss, so they let you know they’ve had a whizz pretty dang quick -lol- By the second change I noticed that in a few short hours, Lucien’s skin improved 100%. I still am putting him in disposables at night because I don’t relish getting up every hour and a half because someone’s soaked through. Once he gets a bit rounder in the belly, some of the AIOs will fit him better and he’ll be able to go into those at night with a soaker pad.
