Where Were You?
1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (November 22, 1963) Not Born yet
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (May 18, 1980) I was not quite 3, so probably nap or something
3. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (January 28, 1986) In third grade watching it on the school TV. I was 8
4. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (October 17, 1989) I was 11 years old. I vaguely remember watching the news and back then and still now I am quite terrified of natural disasters. This probably didn’t help much.
5. When the Berlin Wall fell (November 9, 1989) I was still 11 years old and in school. We talked about it the next day watching the news in the classroom.
6. When the Gulf War began (January 16, 1991) I had just come home from school. It was all we watched that evening on the news. I was 13
7. When the first World Trade Center bombing happened (February 26, 1993) I was 15, New York was a million miles away to me. It really didn’t have any impact on me, as it didn’t directly affect what was going on in my tiny teenage life.
8. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (June 17, 1994) Watched it on the tube. I knew he was guilty. Why run if you’re not guilty?
9. When the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed (April 19, 1995) For some reason I was home from school that day, I remember watching the news. My mom was blathering on about something. I remember having to shout at her to shut the hell up, something serious had happened. I remember crying, feeling sick, I couldn’t believe it was happening. I was 17. So strange how things started to affect my life in just two years. Five years later, while sitting in the car on a warm Summer morning, waiting for my train, I listened to Timothy McVeigh be put to death over local AM radio waves.
10. When Princess Di was killed (August 31, 1997) I was watching the news, I knew it was a celebrity thing, then I heard someone died, then they said who it was. I was afraid to tell my mom. She was quite fond of Princess Di.
11. When Bush was first announced President (November 7, 2000) Working. I remeber being very angry and got a lot accomplished that day in Pet and Garden because I was so angry. It was my early 20’s equivalent to a housewife being upset and needing to clean something.
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (February 28, 2001) Don’t recall this one.
13. When terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center (September 11, 2001)I was still sleeping when the first plane hit the tower. Patrick called us on the phone yelling for us to turn on CNN. We had just about 45 seconds of realization before the second plane hit. I was a mess that day. I cried a lot, I called a lot of people in Michigan that I knew worked in targetable places to make sure they had gone home. I watched CNN in horror for days after that, then I couldn’t watch it anymore.
14. When Columbia disintegrated during re-entry over Texas. (February 1, 2003) I don’t remember really. I read about it on a forum. I said, probably something faulty on it, it’s usually why these things go wrong.
