what could possibly go wrong?
Tonight, we had some excitement. To sum up.
We’re buying a house (in case you’ve been under a rock and not reading my site). Like TOMORROW-panics- So, what could be worse than oh say the house burning down, me or K getting hit by a bus, or the bank going bankrupt? How about, our block heater plug CATCHING ON FIRE.. That’s right folks. Catching on fire. Luckily our den window over looks the parking lot, right at our car. K looked out the window because he thought he saw someone waving a flashlight around and was like no that’s too bright to be a flashlight. So we get up and look out the window and fancy that.. the freaking plug going to the block heater plug is arching, and blazing with fire. He threw his shoes on, grabbed my keys, and somehow was down 6 flights of stairs and to the garage door in under 30 seconds. By the time he reached the door, the light had stopped. I watched from the window, just absolutely certain the car was about to explode. It was some of the most tense moments of my life. I was nearly in tears, I was shouting at K to be careful though the window. Our neighbours probably think I’m crazy.
He gets to the car and is inspecting it, and I see him pick up the cord off the ground. That’s when I knew it had melted through. He unplugged the cord from the garage wall and came back upstairs. So like sometime in the next few days we get to find the time to take the car to the dealer and find out if the fault was the block heater plug, the cord used to plug it in(it’s brand new, well was..), or the actual juice coming out of the parking structure plug. It’s gonna cost us about $300. Which is just what we don’t need when signing over our lives for the next 15 years.
UGH.
He started the car and it is running fine. I really wish Murphy would take a fucking vacation from law for a while. Seriously. I’ve run out of boxes, we’re both fighting the start of a cold, the god damn car plug catches on fire.. NO MORE I say!

I’d suspect a faulty block heater lead-in cord. A block heater is merely an immersion heater that replaces a freeze plug in the block. (A freeze plug is a sacrificial piece of metal that will burst if the engine coolant freezes, so that the block itself doesn’t crack) It might have had the slightest nick or imperfection (the phase and neutral wire look awfully close together) and under load it decided to burn in half. A big deal to be sure, but at the same time it shouldn’t have affected the vehicle itself.

personally I think your wingwangs on the whosamawhatsits are a little loose… if you tighten them with the whatchamacallit, the thingamagig will be fine.. :D…. This will mean the widget will be firm…… and it also makes a good fire-extinguisher.. hehe
