Wednesday, The Big Travel Day
We woke up Wednesday July 28th around 4am to get ready to leave to get Flame ready to go. We left shortly before 5am, after a sorta tearful goodbye to my mum and the dog. After getting to the barn, I went to turn on the lights above his stall, picked the wrong switch and scared the piss out of the poor horses at the end of the barn that didn’t know we were there. I gave Flame his breakfast and brushed him up really good.. He had laid down to sleep that night, so he was covered in shavings. So I got him all prettied up while he had his eats. We made sure we had all our stuff ready to go for when Brian showed up with the trailer.
He arrived around 5:30am and we loaded all my stuff into the trailer. When I packed everything up, it seemed like we had SO much, but later in the day, it seemed like so little once it was all put back in a tack locker. When loading Flame he snorted just a tiny bit while getting his shipping boots and crashcap on, but I think he realized that, those things only come on when he’s going somewhere important; like showing etc. When he went to clinic 3 years ago and had a horrible time of it all, he was just shoved quickly into a trailer and hauled off. I was expecting much more of a problem with him because of that. We’ve certainly had enough issues with him since then.
I walked him down to the trailer, handed him over to Brian, and gave him a quick threat on his behaviour issues. He gave Brian a quick sniffover and walked up to the back of the trailer and peered in, gave a few huge snorts and put 2 feet in to check it out. He backed out of the trailer, but with a bit of coaxing and some remanuvering he just stepped nicely up into the trailer and let Brian tie him up. I closed the door after my dad put up the buttbar, and we were ready to go. I had a quick goodbye with my dad (no time for tears that way), and I hopped up in the trailer and off we went. I have to admit I was a bit leary of going all that way with a complete stranger.. those uncomfortable silences in conversation are never a good thing, but we had a blast the entire trip up.
We traveled from shortly before 6am till about 4:45pm, with 2 stops in London for breakfast and to give Flame water, and then again in Napanee for water and a quick wee and a salad for me. We went over the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, instead of the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit because the “wait time” was supposed to be less there. 2 hours versus 3-5. Well, all I can say that is was VERY short. We were in customs port for about a minute. The girl asked us for where we were from, how long we were out of the country and if we were bringing in any booze or tobacco. We answered those questions, and she said go head have a nice day. So we did*L* I wonder if Brian won anything on his lottery ticket we bought that day, cuz I didn’t*L* I saw Jello as we were traveling past the Brighton Mall exit. She was off to work. I silently said farewell to the area, and prepared for the next 10 hours *L*
Arriving at the farm, I went in and found out where Flame was going. They had placed him in the foaling stall for the first few days while he adjusted to the place and settled in. We unloaded him from the trailer and dropped him off into the stall. He drank a huge bucket of water right away, and proceeded to check the place out. I unloaded my stuff from the horse trailer and then had to make the decision of what stayed and what went. I am going to have to get a small trunk to keep a the barn as my tack locker is quite small. It’s just big enough for my saddle, grooming box and first aid kit. K came to get me, and went to visit with Flame for a few minutes while I finished up. We loaded up the car and came home. I have to find a place to put my huntseat saddle, it’d fit nicely in the front closet, but that space is already used up by the old monitor. So I dunno.. I could put it in the locker, it stays fairly dry down there.. Can’t be any worse than the old porch.
