Friday 5
1. What was the first band you saw in concert?
The first band I ever saw in concert was New Kids on the Block. I was in 8th grade and already out of the NKOTB phase, but this girl I was friends with had the tickets.. I knew it would make my cousin Danielle sick if I got to go and she didn’t*L* So I went. It wasn’t a bad show.. I can remember it.. It was at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit(where they have the hockey games), we were alllll the way up in the kissing God section. Those 5 boys were like dancing ants on the stage*L*
2. Who is your favorite artist/band now?
That’s a pretty tough question for me. A few years ago, I would have been Tori Amos hands down.. and while she’s still up there in the Top 5 for me…. My musical tastes have grown and shifted so much, that I really don’t have an all time favourite. So my top 5 are Tori, TOBASOL, Vienna Teng, Catie Curtis, Lucinda Williams.
3. What’s your favorite song?
Currently my favourite song is a tossup between Lullaby For A Stormy Night by Vienna and Hello by Evanescence.
4. If you could play any instrument, what would it be?
Can already play several… Piano, flute/piccalo, harp, hammered dulcimer, some saxiphone and clarinet.. I have always wanted to learn the violin.. I have one.. she sits in my closet.. not sure if she’s playable*L* because I don’t know how to play and it would be hard to learn here in the apartment without effectively pissing off many neighbours. Though, if I was given the choice.. I would want just a piano, and to reaquaint myself with that. That is what is part of me. I started taking lessons when I was three years old.. Sitting in a plastic booster seat that was most likley ripped off from the local McDonald’s.. My teacher’s name was Penny.. I learned all the timely classics like Hot Cross Buns, Mary had a Little Lamb, and of course.. Twinkle Twinkle Little star.. I took lessons for years.. I stopped when I was about 14.. because the teacher I had was this mentally unstable old witch.. and I was finally at an age where I wasn’t too reserved to say, I’m not doing this anymore.. she’s crazy. So I stopped the lessons, but continued to play. My dad found this lovely lady in our hometown that gave lessons out of her home, I balked I threw fits, I wasn’t going to do it.. But the threat of the piano being tossed out, made me to agree to go a few times.. and see if I liked her. I fell in love with her. She was from the Ukraine, and her house was just so lovely.. decorated in crafts and art from her country.. She had this beautiful Steinway piano.. and just herself.. was so wondefully sweet. I took lessons frrom her from the time I was just barely 16 till when I went to University in the fall of 1995. I took lessons at the University for the 2 years I was there.. I did the dreaded recitals in an actual performance hall, on a proffesionally maintained instrument.. It terrified me and thrilled me at the same time.. Of course when I dropped University, I never took back up with lessons.. I continued to play.. I longed for the Steinways at my school.. but my lovely old girl back home gave unconditionally. I really stopped playing.. when I became involved in this relationship.. because they didn’t like to sit and listen.. it was easier to just not play.. than beg and wheedle to get them to sit and listen.. or even just not bitch if i took the time TO play.. I regret that more than anything.. Since I got out of that relationship, met K, and have moved.. having no piano.. I think I’ve maybe played a total of 4 times.. and never for long.. My old girl is out of tune.. and while for a while.. it was ok to be out of tune.. she’s just tooo out of tune now.. I miss playing…. so while it wouldn’t be learning to play.. it would be something great for me.. to just be able to sit down.. and find that magic again.
5. If you could meet any musical icon (past or present), who would it be and why?
Either Gillian Welch or Woodie Guthrie. Gillian because she’s an amazing musician, I’d love to sit and have coffee with her, discuss music and life.. and Woody.. well.. from all that I’ve read about him, learned about him through his songs and music… I’d love to sit back, and hear what he has to say about what has happened in the world.. and what he thinks about the current state of it. It would be some serious discussion..
